Science: Space, Climate, Computers, Plants & Animals, Health » The Comb Jelly - Earth’s first animalResearchers from Harvard University, University of Hawaii and American Museum of Natural History descovered that the first animal to diverge from the base of tree is the comb jelly, not the less complex sponge, which had previously been given the honor. The finding was unexpected because evolutionary biologists had thought that less complex animals split off and evolved separately first. The results of the recent study suggested that the comb jelly, which has tissues and a nervous system, split off from other animals before the tissue-less, nerve-less sponge. After diverging from other species, the comb jelly probably continued to evolve, therefore, today’s comb jelly probably looks very different that did the earliest comb jelly.
